Description

This is a shop with former hotel rooms above, dating from the Victorian period and constructed in an enriched Victorian classical style. The building has roughcast walls accentuated by sill bands and straight rusticated quoin strips. The roof is hipped and slate-covered, with bracketed eaves and a brick stack on the Palace Street side. The building is three storeys high.

The High Street elevation has two bays. The middle storey features 12-pane hornless sash windows set within ornate, eared and lugged architraves, with keystones that have scrolled sides. The upper storey has 9-pane hornless sash windows in architraves with similar keystones, and moulded upper sections that form a continuous band across the storey; these windows are less elaborate than those on the middle storey. The Palace Street elevation is three bays, mirroring the High Street detail, although the left-hand bay is blind.

An early 20th-century shop front is present on both elevations, with a wooden fascia wrapping around the corner. The main doorway is located in the splayed corner, leading to a door with a glazed panel and fluted side panels, beneath an overlight. A half-lit fielded-panel door with a raised field and overlight is on the Palace Street elevation, while a panelled door and overlight are located to the left on the High Street elevation. Windows are set between heavy brick surrounds; on the Palace Street elevation, two windows to the left of the doorway and three to the right each consist of large panes separated by narrow central panes with metal glazing bars. The High Street elevation features a single, large window.
