Description

The Tall Barn at Glynllifon College Farm is a 19th-century rubble barn featuring red brick jambs and a half-hipped slate roof. The west elevation is nearly symmetrical, with an off-centre camber-arched high-level cart entrance flanked by slit ventilators on two levels, plus an additional ventilator above the arch. The northern end bay has a loft, which includes two small-pane and vented hopper windows above a central square-headed boarded door with an overlight. Adjacent to this is a contemporary single-storey range that has an open-fronted shelter and a through passage leading to the upper farmyard. The southern end features more slit ventilators above an added lean-to and a single-storey link to the cowsheds on the south-western side of the lower farmyard, which has similar windows, a stable-type door, and a square-headed opening into the through passage to the upper farmyard.

The east side of the barn is more varied in design. The northern bay contains a camber-headed cart entrance with boarded gates, while the second bay from the south end features a pair of narrower arched cart entrances set within a tall relieving arch, accompanied by a slit ventilator. All arches are adorned with red brick voussoirs. In the middle section, there is a modern entrance with sliding doors. Three bays have loft openings; above the northern archway is a small-pane and vented hopper window, along with another opening with a lowered sill. There is a boarded loft door in the centre and a similar opening at the southern end.

To the north, a single-storey continuation has a square-headed opening with a split-boarded door near the hipped roof end, and mostly modern windows to its left. Beyond this is the attached cross range of the long northern range, which includes the through passage and connects to the former boiler house. The barn was not accessible at the time of inspection.
