Description

Bodwigan is an early 18th-century two-storey vernacular farmhouse featuring a three-window range with widely spaced windows along a long linear layout. The building is constructed of rubble masonry, with the entrance elevation limewashed. It has a roof made of small old slates, grouted, with tiled coping and large gable stacks that have dripstones.

To the southwest of the farmhouse is a single-storey agricultural range that has been connected to the house by a linking block. The entrance elevation of the farmhouse faces southeast and consists of a three-window range with a central doorway, which is now covered by a modern flat-roofed porch. Above the door is an inscribed stone that reads: W / I M / Bodwigan / 1712. The windows are primarily four-pane horned sashes, except for a small single-paned fixed light located at the far left (southwest) end, likely serving a pantry or inglenook. The rear of the farmhouse features sparse and scattered fenestration, including a four-pane sash, a six-pane sash (both horned), and two modern casements. The rear doorway is offset to the left and also has a modern flat-roofed porch.

The attached agricultural range consists of four bays, with the oldest part being the central two bays. This range has been extended by adding a single bay to the far left (southwest) and another to the right (northeast), linking it to the house. Originally, the range was likely used as a cowhouse, with each bay having a single doorway. It has since been adapted for other uses, with windows added to the left of the left-hand doorway and to the right of the second doorway along the range from the house. The rear of the range has a corrugated iron structure built against the rear wall.

The interior was not inspected during the survey.
