Description

This is a gable-entry Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, built in the 18th century. The exterior is of grit rendered stone with smooth rendered dressings, and a slate roof. The chapel is symmetrically designed. The central entrance features a fanlight with radial glazing bars, framed by a moulded arch resting on scrolled corbels and a stressed keystone. The tall, flanking windows have similarly styled heads, with plain jambs and moulded sills on square corbels. Above the entrance is an inscribed arched slate plaque in a moulded surround, displaying the chapel’s name and date of construction, along with Welsh text. A circular, louvred ventilation grille with a moulded surround is set within the gable pediment. The corners of the entrance elevation have stressed, smooth rendered quoins. The side walls contain four tall, unequal sash windows with smooth rendered architraves, round heads, stressed keystone detail, and slate sills.

The main entrance opens into a tiled vestibule, with side entrance doors leading into the chapel. The chapel walls are rendered with ashlar scoring and moulded coving. The ceiling features ornate floriate light bosses and a large, ornate central ventilation grille with a moulded surround. The interior contains three ranks of raking pews. The "set fawr" (deacons’ seats) and pulpit are located at the entrance end. The “set fawr” is rectangular with side entrances and facing panels surmounted by shaped balusters that angle outwards under a moulded rail, with square newel posts topped by banded globe finials. The pulpit is divided into three bays, with the central bay slightly advanced and featuring a lectern on scrolled brackets; a moulded rail sits above a cusped frieze above facing panels with moulded surrounds. The side entrance steps have squared, chamfered newel posts with banded globe finials and a moulded rail on shaped balusters. To the rear of the pulpit is a round-headed recess featuring a moulded arch with a stressed keystone on engaged pilasters, with flanking round-headed lights that illuminate the vestibule.
