Description
The Old Dairy of Plas Newydd is a single-storey building with a U-shaped plan, dating from the 19th century and designed in the Gothick style. The central range faces east, with wings that create a courtyard to the west. The main elevation is symmetrically arranged, featuring a central entrance flanked by octagonal buttress piers, with two windows on either side and additional octagonal buttresses at the corners. The building has a plinth and an eaves band, along with two small cupolas on the central range. The hipped roof is covered with large slates, and there is a projecting chimney breast at the west end of the south wing, topped with an embattled stack. An internal stack is located at the east end of the north wall.
The windows are made of cast-iron in a Gothick lattice design, featuring lozenge panes and ventilator grilles, with flat-headed lintels that include keystones. There are doors on both sides of the south and central wings, as well as on the south side of the north wing, each with rectangular fanlights. Cast-iron ventilators are set into the walls, and there is one original cast-iron rainwater head on the northeast corner, marked with an 'A' and a crown above it. A lean-to addition is present on the gable of the north wing, along with a covered area.
Inside, the central area has been converted into a tea-room, featuring a tiled milking parlour. The roof structure includes king-post trusses and square purlins.
