Description

This is a two-storey chapel with a shorter, two-storey chapel house at the southern end. The building was constructed in the 18th century using local rubble masonry, with most of the external walls rendered and covered with a slate roof. A gable stack is visible on the south side. The chapel's front elevation faces east, featuring window and door surrounds with rendered, eared architraves. The chapel has 12-pane hornless sash windows; three windows illuminate the gallery, two are located below (either side of the pulpit), and there are ground floor doorways at either end. The chapel house has 4-pane sash windows and a single window range on its north end, with a blocked doorway. The north gable wall of the chapel, which is exposed rubble, reveals the line of the original roof pitch and a blocked attic opening above a 12-pane sash window. The rear of the chapel has two 16-pane sash windows towards the gallery and a modern fixed light on the north side of the ground floor. A modern porch and a single-storey wing extending behind the chapel house are also present. A slate plaque on the south wall of the chapel house commemorates Christmas Evans (1766-1838) and the Esgob Beddwyr Mon (Mon Superintendents) from 1791-1826, noting its former name, Ty Cildwrn, and the involvement of Ynys Mon council.

A small yard fronts the chapel, leading to a rectangular churchyard enclosed by rubble walls and gate piers. Within the yard stands a polished granite obelisk dedicated to J R Davies, a former minister, alongside several slate monuments, including one commemorating Catherine Evans, wife of Christmas Evans, who died in 1823.

The chapel entrances, located on either side of the pulpit, lead into small, timber-boarded vestibule enclosures, each with gallery stairs. Boarded doors open onto the staircases and the main chapel area. The interior of the chapel is nearly square, with well-preserved original features including three ranks of box pews on the ground floor, the central rank being wider and divided. A gallery, which spans the corners of the room, has raking pews and a panelled front, supported by broadly chamfered, slightly tapering timber piers. A clock (by H Roberts of Llangefni) is positioned centrally in the gallery front, the mechanism now housed within one of the piers – it was originally contained within a casing inset in the rear wall. A raised, six-step pulpit features stairs with a turned newel post, stick balusters, and a clasping rail, with a door on the south side. The pulpit itself has a panelled front with curved, fluted angles, set on shaped marble piers; its high, panelled back originally displayed a plaque dedicated to the memory of Christmas Evans’ ministry, and was later moved to the front of Peniel chapel in the town centre.
