Description

This is a small farmhouse with a complex building history. The structure is largely built of rubble, partially rendered, and has slate roofs. The main range, which faces east, likely incorporates a core dating back to the 17th or 18th century, although its appearance was significantly altered in the early 19th century. It is now a long, two-window range with an entrance in an added gable porch, positioned to the left of a diagonally set axial stack, with a later stack at the right-hand gable end. The entrance is flanked by irregularly placed 12-pane sash windows on each floor. A 9-pane sash window at an intermediate height may represent an earlier opening, evident by a line in the rendering, which is continued as the eaves line of an additional, single-window bay to the left. The rear of this bay has a strongly projecting roof, revealing the early 19th-century roofline of the remodelled section, featuring a 6-paned first-floor sash window. A long rear wing, probably also of early date, originally terminated in a gable end stack, which was later extended beyond the stack with the addition of servants' quarters. This wing is partially obscured by a flat-roofed extension incorporating a gabled porch, but a small-paned sash window is visible on the ground floor to the right, and a similar window in a raking dormer above to the left. The rear of the main range, to the north of the wing, is strongly of 19th-century character, with tall 12-pane sash windows on each floor. Connected to the north gable of the main range is a lofted stable. Scattered throughout the building are widely slobbered mortars and stone lintels. A boarded door is located on the left side of the west elevation, with a stone staircase to the right, leading to a boarded loft door, which breaks the eaves line with a raking dormer roof. Small shuttered windows are set under the eaves to the front and rear of the loft, and a small skylight is present on the west roof pitch. The back kitchen is accessed via a modern lean-to extension with a gabled porch on the right. The west end of the back kitchen is marked by a tall stone chimney with a capping and a modern pot, similar in dimensions to the central chimney in the main range. To the left of the porch, set low in the roof pitch, is a small 9-pane sash with a raking dormer roof, accompanied by a similar window on the ground floor to the right of the porch. Lofted servants' quarters are attached in line with the back kitchen, forming a two-window range with a garage door inserted into the west gable end, and a small skylight set low to the left end. The windows are predominantly modern 9-pane top-hung casements, with one original 9-pane fixed light in the gable end. Alterations have obscured the original ground plan, suggesting the house was originally built with a cross-passage and gable end chimney. The principal room is served by a large central chimney, featuring a tall inglenook fireplace with a cambered bressumer and a chamfered cross-beam to the ceiling, including a boarded door with two wide boards. Similarly, the back kitchen has an inglenook fireplace with a rough-hewn bressumer.
