Description
The gatepiers to the south courtyard at Caerau are tall structures made of dressed stone, featuring fluted gate stops. They are square in shape and sit on a sloping plinth. Each gate pier has a flat cap with a moulded cornice, topped with tapering finials that have central circular depressions, which once held globes; the left (southwest) gatepost now has a cannonball instead. The gateway is fitted with 19th-century gates that have regularly spaced tall vertical rails, with paired short rails in between. The design includes foot and lock rails, and the head rail is adorned with scrolled decoration.
