Description
The lofted stables at Plas Gwyn, built in the 18th century, are constructed from rubble masonry with widely slobbered mortar. The building features a shallow hipped slate roof with a rendered brick stack on the right side. The front elevation is symmetrically designed, with an entrance to the stables and tack room set back under a wide segmental arch. On either side of the entrance, there are ground floor windows that are hornless 12-pane sashes, and above them, the first floor has similar windows with 6 panes. All windows have flat brick heads and slate sills, while the segmental arch is rendered. An external flight of stone steps along the south wall leads up to the loft door. High on the wall to the right of the doorway is a stone plaque with the initials and date: P / P M / 1777. Above the entrance is a commemorative slate tablet that reads: Paul Panton 1731-1797 Hynafiaethydd (Antiquary). The rear wall has three windows set low.
Inside, the stables have sawn joists and previously featured lath and plaster ceilings. The stone slab floors have been partially covered with concrete. The loft area retains a small decorative iron grate.
