Description
The Pearl Engine House is a Grade II listed engine house, roughly square in shape, with a gabled roof. It was once connected to a larger rectangular boiler house with a chimney on the north side, which has since been demolished. To the south lies the capped Pearl Shaft, and to the southwest is the area of the capstan pit and rope channel. The walls are made of rubble and are generally 0.6 meters thick, except for the bob wall to the south, which is 1.2 meters thick below the point where the engine beam fulcrum is located. The roof was originally slated. There are ground floor openings on each elevation with replaced timber lintels, and a tall brick arched opening set high in the south elevation for the bob mount.
Inside, the northern half of the floor features the mountings for the engine cylinder and the cylinder block. The southern part of the floor contains the cataract pit, which is approximately 2 meters lower than the level of the cylinder block.
