Description
Cauldhame Farm is an early 19th century steading arranged around a courtyard. It is constructed of cream sandstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings.
The north range incorporates a threshing barn and granary. A single segmental cart arch is located to the outer left of the south elevation, overlooking the courtyard. A door is situated to the outer right of the north elevation, with a gabled dormerheaded loading door above. An arrowslit is visible to the outer left. A horsemill is centrally placed within the north range.
The horsemill is an octagonal structure with a timber lintel above the opening facing north; a blocked opening is present on the southwest side. It is roofed with pantiles.
The east range is a gabled, single-storey block, derelict in the southeastern portion. The south range is single-storey, and the west range is also single-storey.
A farmhouse is located to the northwest of the steading ranges, and is harled with a piended slate addition to the west. A door is present on the return to the left. The farmhouse features 12-pane sash and case windows. The roofs are red pantiled, with corrugated repairs to the north range. The farmhouse has a slate easing course, ashlar coped skews, and rendered stacks.
Cauldhame Farm represents a good example of a small, largely unaltered steading that remained in agricultural use as of 1990.
