Description
A group of six single-storey and attic cottages with a single-storey schoolhouse, likely designed by Campbell Walker and built in 1873. The cottages and schoolhouse are situated on Edinburgh Road, Linlithgow.
The buildings are a symmetrical terrace constructed of cream sandstone cyclopean rubble with rock-faced bands forming cill and lintel courses. Ashlar dressings are used on the main elevations, while the rear elevation is of snecked rubble. The window reveals are stop-chamfered, and stone mullions are present.
The cottages feature tripartite windows at ground level, with bipartite windows above on the north, east, and west elevations. They have squared basket-arched doorways with boarded doors and decorative wrought-iron hinges. The roofs are steeply gabled, covered with grey slates and fishscale bands, with deeply overhanging eaves and bargeboards. Tall, coped rock-faced stacks are present. The north, or entrance, elevation has four recessed bays in the centre; two doors are flanked by windows, and two gabled dormers are above. Two M-gabled bays project to the right and left, each pair featuring a door towards the centre bays with a tripartite window at ground level and a bipartite attic window. Gabled return elevations on the left and right have a stone canopied door at centre, flanked by narrow windows, and bipartite attic windows. A projecting single-storey service wing is set to the south. The rear elevation has a central bay with two doors flanked by projecting service wings; two doors are in the bay to the right with a service wing to the outer right, mirroring the left side (with the unfortunate addition of modern dormers and slates). Rooflights are present on the rear elevation. Diamond-pane leaded glazing is used in the casement windows.
The schoolhouse has a three-bay west, or entrance, elevation, with a door set within a timber gabled porch flanked by tripartite windows. The north and south side elevations are gabled, displaying a tripartite window with cusped lights set under a steep relieving arch; the lower half is fitted with sash and case windows, while the upper half is blind and divided by a stone transom. The rear, or east, elevation features a gabled projection with a tall stack near the apex, accompanied by a modern flat-roofed harled extension. Plate glass sash and case windows are used, and a leaded fleche is placed centrally on the roof, along with three modern rooflights on the east elevation.
The schoolhouse and cottages were first recorded in the 1873 valuation roll, with RHJ Stewart of Champfleurie House noted as the owner. Each cottage was rented at £4 per annum, and the School Board of the Parish of Linlithgow ran the school. The front roof was re-slated around 1990 using salvaged slates from the rear. A refurbishment application for two vacant cottages was submitted in late 1991.
