Description
The Macgregor of Glengyle Burial Enclosure is a late 17th century burial ground situated in a picturesque location on a man-made promontory overlooking Loch Katrine. In 1859, Loch Katrine was repurposed as Glasgow's primary source of drinking water, leading to an artificial increase in the water level. To prevent the burial site from being submerged, the Glasgow Corporation raised it in 1922 onto a T-shaped causeway, providing access from the elevated shoreline.
This site serves as one of the historical burial grounds for the MacGregor family of Glengyle. Although the famous Rob Roy MacGregor was born nearby in 1671, he is not buried here; instead, he rests at The Old Parish Church in Balquhidder.
The burial site is located at the far southwest end of the causeway, with a retaining wall extending to the southwest, northwest, and southeast, elevating the site above the water level. An enclosing wall runs to the northeast, connecting with the retaining wall. The entrance is marked by a weathered inscribed lintel, which is believed to feature the MacGregor of Glengyle crest, the motto "E'en do and spare not," and an inscription commemorating Katherine MacGregor of Glengyle's repair of the chapel in 1781 in memory of her husband, Malcolm MacGregor, and their son, John MacGregor. Inside the enclosure, a low wall surrounds 12 grave slabs, with the earliest dating back to 1699. Additionally, four more slabs are located outside the low wall to the northwest.
The materials used in the construction include random rubble with rubble copes for the retaining and boundary walls, and render for the low enclosure wall within the site.
