Description
The Macgregor Of Glengyle Burial Enclosure is an 18th century small square-plan burial site located on rising ground to the northwest of Glengyle House, which is listed separately. This enclosure may have been established on the site of a 17th century burial ground and has a close historical connection to the MacGregor family of Glengyle. Notably, the legendary Rob Roy MacGregor was born at Glengyle in 1671, although he is buried at The Old Parish Church in Balquhidder, which is also listed separately.
The exterior of the burial enclosure is simple, featuring unornamented walls with a ball finial at each corner. Access is through a segmentally headed doorway on the southwest side. Inside, there are several table tombs, gravestones, and wall-mounted memorial plaques that appear to date from the 19th century. A weathered red sandstone figurative memorial from around the 17th century has been inserted into the wall. Dominating the enclosure is a large Celtic Cross that oversails the walls, which also seems to date from the 19th century. A simple memorial plaque honors Colonel Gregor MacGregor 'Ghlune Dhu', who was Rob Roy's nephew and participated in the Jacobite uprisings of 1715 and 1745; he died in 1777 at the age of 88.
The materials used in the construction include random rubble, ashlar copes, and moulded sandstone ball finials.
