Description
The Stronachlachar Pier and Pier Building were constructed in the early 20th century to serve the SS Sir Walter Scott, highlighting the importance of the steamer route in the development of the small settlement of Stronachlachar and the growth of tourism around Loch Katrine and Loch Lomond in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The pier has a T-plan design that extends into Loch Katrine from a land area currently used as a tarmac car park. It is supported by a rubble revetment with dressed stone detailing and features cast iron railings. A short jetty made of rubble with dressed raised quoins projects east from this area, supporting one end of a bow-girdered bridge. The bridge leads to a cast-iron landing stage oriented northwest to southeast, with pointed dressed stone cutwaters at each end.
The pier building is located just northwest of the pier. It is a single-storey structure with a rectangular plan and a small outshot at the northwest corner. The southwest elevation is sheltered by an 8-bay veranda supported by cast-iron columns and featuring quatrefoil spandrels. Beneath the veranda, there are seven irregularly spaced bays, including a two-leaf timber panelled door leading to the waiting room in the second bay from the right, and a single timber door in the third bay from the left, with the remaining bays being windows. The northeast elevation is simpler but includes a canted bay window that provides light to the waiting room. The southeast side elevation has a painted timber board that reads 'Stronachlachar'. The building is harled and has a piended Rosemary tile roof, with 4-pane timber sash and case windows.
Inside, the pier building remains largely unaltered. The ladies' toilets, accessed from the waiting room, still have their original joinery, tiles, and sinks.
