Description

The Loch Katrine Royal Cottage Aqueduct Intakes, designed by John F Bateman between 1856 and 1859, were extended by James M Gale from 1895 to 1900 and heightened in 1919, likely by J R Sutherland. The structure features a pair of oval intake basins set within a sluice and retaining wall that projects into the loch. It is constructed from coursed bull-faced sandstone, possibly with a mass concrete core.

The battered sluice and retaining wall, which has canted sides, includes a parapet and a broad, flagged walkway on top. This walkway is equipped with eight sluice valves, three for the western basin and five for the eastern basin, all dated 1900 and made by Glenfield & Kennedy of Kilmarnock. Sluice openings are located at the base of the wall between stepped buttresses on the inner side. Stone steps at both ends lead down to the two oval intake basins at a lower level, which are divided by a central gangway that contains filter mechanisms. Each basin has a round-arched exit channel featuring prominent voussoirs, heavy pilaster buttresses, and shallow pediments above commemorative plaques. Iron grills at each opening display the Glasgow coat of arms.

A rubble retaining wall is present on the land side, and circa 1900 tubular cast-iron railings with ornamental flower motifs adorn all footways. Additionally, circa 1860 cast-iron railings with square-plan tapered uprights are found at the top of the land-side retaining wall. The retaining walls extend to the east and west of the intake, and there is a subterranean chamber located to the west of the intake.
