Description
The South West Range of the Farmsteading at Shemore is a later 18th century farmhouse that was refronted in the mid 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay gabled structure with linking gabled pavilions that create a U-shaped courtyard at the rear. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar margins and dressings.
The main southeast elevation, dating from the mid 19th century, features a central door with a window above it, flanked by advanced gabled bays. The ground floor has a bipartite window, while the first floor includes a pointed arch window with Y-tracery glazing. The linking bay has a window leading to the gabled pavilions, which are topped with a conical capped finial and have arrowslit ventilation.
The northwest rear elevation retains its original design, displaying three widely spaced bays arranged symmetrically. There is a low curved porch entrance to the right of center, topped with a conical slate roof, and a door on the right return, along with a modern door and small windows.
The outbuildings consist of a U-shaped rubble range with boarded doors, various enlarged and blocked openings, and a lean-to implement shed to the northwest. The windows throughout include plate glass timber sash and case types, with Y-tracery sash and case windows on the upper floor at the front and four-pane timber sash and case windows at the rear. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring lead flashings and cast-iron rooflights, along with broad coped ridge stacks and circular cans.
