Description
Cononish House, dating to around 1769, is a 2-storey, 3-bay former tacksman's house located several miles west of Tyndrum. It features an adjoining single-storey range and a detached byre at the rear, which is primarily constructed of drystone with battered walls and a replacement corrugated metal pitched roof. These structures are notable examples of Scottish vernacular architecture, with much of their original character preserved. Houses of this size and age that remain largely unaltered on the exterior are uncommon, making this a strong representation of a tacksman's house.
The north entrance elevation includes a later timber monopitch porch extension that obscures the central entrance door, with a window above and flanking windows. To the right, there is a single-storey wing with two windows, one of which has been formed from a former door opening. A timber boarded door is located at the far right, and the end gable is blank. The south elevation features a gabled window in the end bay, breaking the eaves. The principal house has gable stacks with thackstanes, and the single-storey wing has a central thackstoned ridge stack. The long byre range to the north has openings only on the south elevation, and the east gable is no longer present.
Boundary walls consist of rubble to the west and south of the property, with sections of rubble wall to the east.
The principal house is mostly harled, with some painted stone, while the single-storey wing is painted or limewashed rubble. The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with horns, featuring either plate glass or a 2-pane over 2-pane design. The byre has timber boarded doors, and the roof is covered with graded slate.
