Description

The Southern Range, Clock House, at Auchendennan House, dates to 1866 and was designed by John Burnet. It originally comprised a pair of quadrangular-plan stable and domestic ranges, which have undergone later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar margins and dressings, and features crowstepped gables and advanced, bracketed eaves.

The Clock House is a quadrangular range incorporating a tower, with a later segmental-arched court entrance. The South Range includes an early 20th-century segmental-arched pend to the courtyard, positioned off-centre to the right. To the left of the pend is a two-storey, three-bay domestic block with a broad gable to the outer left, and a raised datestone plaque bearing a "M" monogram at the centre. Two later windows have been added to the ground and first floors on the right side. Two narrow bays are on the right, with windows at ground level; the window on the right is smaller than the others. Crowstepped, dormerheaded windows are above. A gable is on the right of the entrance, containing a boarded door at ground level and a boarded hoist door at the upper stage, topped with a ball finial.

The West Range is a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical domestic range. A slightly advanced gabled bay sits at the centre, featuring a round-arched doorway with a rope-moulded hoodmould, now housing modern French doors, with a narrow window above. Flanking bays are symmetrical with windows at ground level and dormerheaded windows above. A square clock tower rises centrally behind the range, with a corbelled and jettied upper stage, displaying a clock on each side, an eaves moulding, a pyramidal fishscale roof, and louvered lucarnes. A single-storey, four-bay wing extends to the left, with a door and two flanking windows, and a blank bay on the far left, alongside a flat-roofed modern addition.

The courtyard includes an L-plan domestic range with a tower, and a single-storey wing to the left of the court. This wing features a narrow boarded door and a large fanlight at the angle, with a window above, sheltered by a bargeboarded canopy. A small window is located at ground level in both flanking blocks. A single-storey range to the right contains two narrow windows and two doors. A circa 1930s cantilevered, piend-roofed glazed garage shelter stands to the east of the courtyard, with roller metal sheet doors.

The original quadrangular-plan cottages and stables were later infilled to form a covered court, creating a rectangular plan. A U-plan stable block is situated to the outer right, connected to the Clock House by a link wall. The South Range of the cottage features a broad gable to the outer left, with a door at centre ground and modern flanking windows, with a hoist door above. An early 20th-century glazed, covered court fills the centre, featuring a metal roller door and flanking pier buttresses. A broad gable is on the outer right, with an arrowslit at ground level and a hoist door above. The North Elevation showcases a gable to the outer left, and a long range to the right with regularly disposed small windows directly under the eaves. Large cast-iron rooflights are present alongside a pyramidal, capped fleche with louvered openings.
