Description

Craig-An-Arden Viaduct is a structure likely designed by James Miller around 1891. It comprises eight tall, round-headed arches on a gentle curve, forming part of the West Highland Railway line between Craigendornan and Fort William, which opened in 1894. The viaduct is constructed from rough-hewn stone with channelled ashlar dressings. The piers are slightly battered and feature rusticated ashlar quoins, along with ashlar voussoirs and channelled intrados. A crenellated parapet runs along the top, featuring ashlar coping, with pierhead dies slightly projecting on guttae-effect corbels. The viaduct descends to a low wall, and one pier has ashlar slab coping. A high, rough-hewn retaining wall runs to the outer right along the road. The station buildings at Arrochar and Tarbet, and Ardlui are listed separately.
