Description

Waterside is a pair of charming and well-preserved late 18th century single storey and attic cottages, with three bays visible from the front, and an extra bay projecting towards Airlie. In the mid-19th century, unusual breaking eaves dormer windows were added to the main (southwest) elevation. Waterside Cottage is positioned with its gable facing Church Street, while both cottages have their principal elevation looking out over their private gardens. The attractive setting close to the River Teith, with gardens sloping down to the riverbank, provides a pleasing view from across the river to the south.

The cottages display a symmetrical arrangement, with the exception of the extra bay on Airlie Cottage. This single bay addition, according to the owners, was likely built in the early 20th century to serve as a massage treatment room for Lady Esher, who was then residing at Roman Camp House (a separate listed building).

Inside, the cottages are similarly designed, featuring a central hall leading to low-ceilinged rooms on the ground floor, with exposed ceiling beams. A narrow timber staircase leads to two small attic bedrooms; the extra bay on Airlie Cottage provides an additional room on both the ground and attic floors.

The rear (northeast) elevation faces the garden of the adjacent Waterside House (a separate listed building). A single-storey outshot containing W.C. facilities is present on each cottage, with small window openings.

The cottages are rendered white on all elevations, with window margins predominantly painted black on Waterside. Attractive timber panelled gabled porches are present on both cottages. The Waterside porch has glazed upper side panels with coloured glass margins, open fret bargeboards with a timber ball and spike finial. The Airlie porch has glazed upper side panels and plain timber bargeboards. Both porches are finished with grey tiles.

The majority of the windows are four-pane timber sash and case windows. Distinctive gabled and canted timber-boarded dormer windows feature on the elevations, with a diamond motif on the gable of the Airlie cottage. All dormers are covered with grey slate.

The main roof is grey slate, with the Airlie roof rising slightly higher than the Waterside roof. Various modern rooflights are present on the Airlie cottage. A rendered and heightened chimney stack with two circular cans is located on the southeast gable apex of the Waterside cottage. A similar, likely shared, rendered chimney stack with various cans is on the southeast gable apex of the Airlie cottage. A painted brick ridge stack with a single can is present on the Airlie cottage.

Random rubble boundary walls with set-on end copes run along South Church Street from Waterside, terminating at the River Teith. A similar wall extends northwest of Airlie, turning 90 degrees and running southwest to the riverbank. Another random rubble wall divides the plot between the two cottages.
