Description

The Old Parish Church graveyard in Callander is an irregularly shaped walled graveyard from the 18th century, featuring a hexagonal watch house built in the 19th century. This site is believed to be where Callander's first church was founded in 1238. Nearby is Tom na Cheasaig, or the Mound of St Kessog, where the 6th century saint is thought to have preached. The graveyard is beautifully located near the banks of the River Teith, offering stunning views of Ben Ledi.

The entrance is located to the east along Bridge Street, with the wall curving around the simple opening. The ground within the graveyard slopes steeply to the northwest. Some gravestones may date back to the 18th century, but they are hard to read due to deterioration; most gravestones are from the 19th century.

The watch house is built into the north wall, with three sides facing into the graveyard. The central door has an inscription above that appears to read 'design & Constructed by Duncan McNa Joiner' along with the abbreviated names of the builders 'J.Par F.Bu & D. McGre Masons'. The flanking sides have blocked windows, while the three faces on the outside to the east are blank.

The boundary wall is made of random rubble with coping stones set on end, and there are cast iron gates at the entrance. The watch house is constructed from coursed, weathered sandstone and features a timber boarded door at the center with a tripartite slim letterbox fanlight, which is missing glazing. The watch house has a six-sided grey slate roof that overhangs and exposes the rafters, but it is currently in poor condition with some slates missing as of 2004.
