Description
This is a row of three adjoined, simple, two-storey houses located along Bridge Street in Callander, sloping downhill towards Callander Bridge over the River Teith. The houses likely date from the mid to later 18th century. According to the owner of No. 4, the house may have been built between 1745 and 1746 for John McArthur, the Duke of Perth's land agent and the designer of the planned town of Callander in 1739. Due to this historical association and the attractive grouping created by the three houses’ prominent location, they are recognised for their group value.
Nos. 2 and 4 are symmetrically arranged, each with three bays. No. 6, however, is asymmetrically arranged, with four bays set on a corner as the road bends to the southwest.
The exterior of No. 2 features a painted render finish on its principal (southeast) elevation, with painted margins around the windows and door frame. It has a timber panelled door with a small letterbox fanlight and a slight pediment, modern uPVC windows, and a grey slate roof with modern rooflights. A coped ashlar stack with decorative cans is present at the northeast gable. A thick, rendered ridge stack, shared with No. 4, sits at the southwest, also with various cans.
No. 4 has cleaned and re-pointed exposed random rubble stone walls, with painted margins around the openings. It has a timber panelled door with a narrow letterbox fanlight, timber sash and case plate glass windows, and a grey slate roof with roof ventilators. A thick, rendered ridge stack, shared with No. 6, is located at the southwest, and has cans.
No. 6 has random rubble walls, smeared with pointing and lined on the principal elevation to resemble snecked stone. It features a timber effect modern plastic door and windows, and a grey slate roof with a raised coped skew to the southwest, topped by a rendered gable apex stack with various cans.
A random rubble garden boundary wall is adjoined to No. 6, running along Bridge Street and enclosing the plot to the west and north.
