Description

Chapel House, dated 1797, is a two-story, three-bay, rectangular classical building originally built as a Roman Catholic chapel. It was later converted into a private dwelling in the late 20th century. The building is situated south of the River Dee on an elevated site, previously occupied by Dee Castle, and incorporates a fragment of the castle within the northwest angle of the house. The exterior is primarily constructed of tooled, squared, and coursed granite, with harling to the gable and north elevations. A late 20th century single-story addition projects from the north (rear) elevation, and a dressed granite forestair leads to a first-floor doorway on the east, gabled elevation.

The south elevation features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while other elevations have a mix of 6-pane timber casements, 4-pane fixed windows with 2-pane top hoppers. A late 20th century 4-panel timber door provides access, with a boarded timber door on the first floor. The roof is grey slated, with a stone ridge, tooled granite skews, and corniced gable stacks. Cast-iron rhones and rhone pipes are also present.

The interior was unrecorded during a 2006 survey.

Chapel House's design is unusual for a Roman Catholic chapel, appearing intentionally discrete as a small classical house, which may reflect social attitudes towards the Catholic Church during the late 18th century. The chapel was out of use by 1898 and was reportedly used by the Free Church of Scotland from 1843. Dee Castle, erected by the Gordons in the mid 15th century and burned in 1641, stood nearby.
