Description
Wester Finlarig Lodge is a building designed by Balfour Paul (Rowand Anderson, Kininmonth and Paul, Architects, Edinburgh) between 1927 and 1928. It is an asymmetrical two-storey house featuring a main northwest entrance front and garden fronts to the southwest and southeast, all adorned with random grey granite dressings.
The entrance is off-centre and includes a simple flat-headed moulded doorpiece. There is an additional entrance on the southeast garden front, which is located under a loggia or balcony and is flanked by a projecting bay with an ogee roof. The southwest front has three bays, with canted windows in the outer bays on the ground floor. The first-floor windows are set beneath piended bellcast gablets, and the building features multi-pane glazing, ridge stacks, and a local slate roof.
Inside, the entrance lobby leads to an inner stairhall, which contains a polished oak staircase with a simple balustrade and an octagonal newel topped with a carved hare finial. The drawing room and dining room ceilings have plain moulded cornices.
The lodge, likely also designed by Balfour Paul in 1927-28, is a single-storey structure with a symmetrical three-bay southeast front. It is harled with a tooled grey granite centre and a recessed entrance. The windows are multi-pane metal casements, and the building features a granite base course, tall end stacks, and a piended local slate roof.
