Description
Tomintoul Croft is a crofthouse likely built in the early to mid 19th century. It has a rectangular plan and consists of three bays, with a single storey and an attic. The building is situated on high ground, overlooking the village of Braemar. The exterior is constructed of rubble with lime render and pointing, and it features a corrugated-iron roof that covers heather thatch.
On the north elevation, there is a timber lean-to porch at the centre, which breaks the eaves, with a timber door located to the left side and windows flanking it. The south and west elevations have smaller single windows.
Inside, the traditional layout includes two main rooms on the east and west sides, with a central core featuring box-beds and a staircase leading to the roofspace. The eastern room has stone flags on the floor, a raised hearth with a granite shelf to the right, and a cast iron fireback decorated with a rose motif. Above the hearth is a timber 'hanging-lum' with a shelf at the base of the cowl, and there is a small wall niche to the right. Two-leaf panelled timber doors lead to cupboards and a box-bed. The western room contains remnants of a fireplace and box-beds, with an additional box-bed located behind the staircase. The roofspace and staircase are lined with timber and feature 19th and 20th century newspaper and magazine print, along with two more box-beds at the west end of the roofspace.
The windows are timber sash and case with nine-pane glazing, and there are coped and rendered ridge chimney stacks positioned toward the gable ends.
