Description
Clunie Bank is an early 19th century house, with later 19th century alterations and extensions, situated on Clunie Bank Road in Braemar. It is a single storey and attic, T-plan building constructed from squared and coursed rubble. The principal, east-facing elevation is symmetrical, featuring a prominent gable front with two ground floor windows and a Venetian window above, flanked by recessed bays to either side. Doors are positioned in the re-entrant angles, each featuring a rectangular, traceried fan light. Tripartite dormers are set into the wallhead.
The building has predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with 9-pane tripartite dormers incorporating side lights. The roof is covered in grey slate, and includes a battered stack with a cavetto cornice on the east elevation, along with original coped gable stacks to the north and south.
Interior inspection was not possible in November 2005.
Clunie Bank is one of the larger homes in Braemar and is notable for incorporating classical details, being the only building in the village to feature a Venetian window. Constructed using traditional local materials such as granite, slate, and timber, Clunie Bank retains its original external appearance and unchanged footprint, as confirmed by the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey map.
According to a former owner, the house was built in the early 19th century by her great-uncle, Mr Stewart, who was also the father of James Stewart, a Catholic Priest of the parish of Braemar, who later resided in the house.
