Description

This mid-19th century building is a two-storey corn mill that includes an integral drying kiln, a start and awe wheel, and nearly intact internal workings, although these are now disused. It is situated in a rural area next to the Girnoc Burn and has two single-storey cottages with attics to the west. The mill is constructed from pink granite rubble and features timber buckets and paddles for the wheel, which has iron spokes. There is a slated vent on the roof above the kiln to the west, a timber hoist door to the south, and a stable door to the north.

The building has irregular fenestration, with some small pane windows and a notable 9-pane window at ground level. Inside, there are substantial remaining timber internal workings, some dating from the 19th century, along with 20th-century replacements. These workings include bucket elevators, hoppers, and trap doors, as well as timber flooring and stairs. There are also square iron spindles for the wheels and a single pair of stones. A brick funnel leads to the kiln, which has a plaque indicating "Duncan Thomson and Son, Millwrights, Inverurie."

The pair of cottages to the west are unusually aligned single-storey structures with three bays. The cottage furthest to the west has later bipartite attic dormers and is set closely at right angles to the other, which is joined by a low monopitch roof addition. These cottages are made of pink and grey rubble, with a grey slate roof and four-pane timber sash and case bipartite windows. The cottage nearer to the mill has a corrugated iron roof, a boarded timber door at the center, and timber sash and case windows.

Access to the interiors of the cottages was not possible during the visit in December 2005. Additionally, there is a cheese press located on the south wall and a timber structure built to channel water to the south towards the lade.
