Description
The Lodge at Balfunning House is an early 20th-century building, designed as a single storey and attic structure with an overall square plan. It features a pavilion roof that sweeps at the eaves, dormers with shaped ashlar gables in the attic, and a circular-plan tower at the west angle. The exterior is harled with sandstone ashlar dressings, and it has overhanging eaves. The main edges are slightly rounded at the ground floor, with corbelled sections just above.
On the northwest (principal) elevation, there is an entrance with a moulded corniced architrave that includes an inner roll-moulding to the right, leading to a boarded timber door with strap hinges. To the left of the entrance is a window, and there is a dormer to the left in the attic. A rounded projecting bay is located on the outer right, rising to the conical-roofed circular-plan tower just above the eaves. There are small windows on the ground floor to the left and on the attic to the right.
The northeast elevation has a window to the right of the ground floor and a small window to the left, with a dormer to the right in the attic. The southwest elevation features a window to the right of the ground floor and a dormer above it. There is also a rounded projecting bay on the outer left, which rises to the conical-roofed circular-plan tower just above the eaves, along with a small window to the right of the ground floor.
On the southeast elevation, there is an entrance with a glazed timber door to the right of the centre, along with a window to the right, both likely inserted. A window is located to the left, and there is a dormer to the left in the attic. Additionally, there is a small single-storey addition with a piended roof and a window on the outer right.
The building primarily features 9 and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with the ground floor windows having curved bars across the outside. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a large rendered coped stack at the apex of the roof, with one remaining round can.
The entrance gateway consists of a pair of octagonal-plan sandstone ashlar gatepiers that have friezes, cornices, and stepped coping, leading to a replacement steel gate.
