Description
This is a rubble-built obelisk located within Blair Drummond Park, near Blair Drummond House. It was erected between 1766 and 1782 by Lord Kames. The obelisk is of squat proportions and features an inscription reading: “BY HENRY HOME/FOR HIS NEIGHBOURS AS WELL AS FOR HIMSELF/ WAS/ THIS OBELISK ERECTED. GRAFT BENEVOLENCE ON SELF LOVE/THE FRUIT/WILL BE DELICIOUS.” The obelisk’s design is thought to have been influenced by a sketch by Robert Adam. Although no design plan exists within the Home Drummond manuscripts at Register House, there is a sketch design for a new house within those papers.
