Description

Allan Park South Church, located at 22 Dumbarton Road in Stirling, was designed by the architectural firm Peddie and Kinnear of Edinburgh and built in 1867, as indicated by its monogram and date. The church features a Gothic style that may be inspired by early French architecture, with some tracery resembling that found in the top stage of Holyrood Tower or in the triforium of Glasgow Cathedral from around 1240. The use of stepped drip-moulds also reflects characteristics of late Gothic Scottish architecture.

The church is situated on a steeply sloping site, with a full storey of underworks facing Dumbarton Road to the south. The main entrance, despite the postal address, is centrally located in the gable facing Back Walk to the north. It has a cruciform plan, although the cross-arms are short. A square entrance tower with a semi-engaged stair turret topped with a cap-house occupies the southeast re-entrant angle. The building has twin-gabled transepts, each featuring a rose window in the north and south gable heads, and low porches tucked into the northern re-entrant angles.

The exterior is constructed of snecked ashlar, with mostly pointed windows that include plate tracery. The stair turret and the tower wall-heads are capped with copper, while the roofs are slated. Additionally, there are cast-iron gates and railings along Back Walk.
