Description

1-3 Broad Street in Stirling is a building designed by Sir Frank Mears & Partners in collaboration with Stirling Burgh Architect, conceived in 1938 and completed around 1955. The structure is L-shaped, with two and three storeys and seven bays arranged in a 1-2-4 grouping. The eastern block is made of polished yellow sandstone ashlar, while the western block features snecked pink bull-faced sandstone.

The northern elevation, facing Broad Street, has an outer left bay that is slightly advanced and topped with a crowstepped gablehead. To the right, there are four bays that are one floor lower, and a flat-roofed porch is added to the right. Each bay has windows at the ground level, with regular fenestration above.

On the eastern elevation, facing Bow Street, there are three ground-level bays, each with a window, and regular fenestration above, along with a crowstepped gable to the left.

The western elevation is harled and features a small low door at the centre of the ground level, an entrance in a porch to the outer left, and a door with a roll-moulded surround to the right of centre, with a window above to the right.

The southern elevation has six bays, with the outer left bay containing a window at ground level and a triangular-headed dormer above. The adjoining three bays have regular fenestration, and the two bays to the right also feature regular fenestration.

The rear elevation has two bays, with a large stairwell window in the outer right bay and one window above it, while the left bay has regular fenestration.

The building features UPVC tilt and turn windows, graded grey slates, and has a ridge stack to the east with three cans, a stack to the north with two cans, and a gable stack in the left block with three cans.
