Description

Darnley House, located at 14-18 Bow Street in Stirling, is a late 16th century to early 17th century tenemental townhouse that underwent renovations in 1957-58. The building features a four-storey, three-bay main block with an L-plan, including a wing extending to the rear, and is accessed through a pend. The front is constructed of squared rubble and ashlar, while the rear is made of rubble and harled sections. Notable architectural elements include a cill band beneath the dormer-headed windows and crow-stepped gables.

On the west elevation facing Bow Street, there are four recessed openings at the ground level, with a door positioned to the centre left. To the outer right, there is a broad pend featuring an armorial panel below a round-arched head. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with enlarged windows on the first floor, three dormer heads—two gabled and one semicircular—and a 19th century panel set into the facade between the first and second floors.

The east elevation has a single bay set back, with a door at ground level and windows on the first, second, and third floors. To the left, there is another single bay with a pend at ground level and a single pitched roof at the first floor, along with windows on the first, second, and third floors.

The south elevation features a 15-step flight of stairs to the right at ground level, with two windows on each of the first, second, and third floors. There is an advanced section to the left, with the gable end exposed at the third floor.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing, and the steeply pitched roof is covered with grey slates, featuring stacks at each gable with six cans.
