Description
The Mercat Cross on Broad Street in Stirling is a traditional heraldic market cross dating from 1891, when it was restored and re-erected. It features an octagonal ashlar shaft topped with a carved stone representation of a heraldic unicorn seated with a shield. The cross has an ornately carved capital and stands on a base consisting of four steps. The unicorn is depicted in a sitting position, wearing a collar from which a chain wraps around its body. In front of its breast is a crowned shield displaying the Royal Arms of Scotland, surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Thistle. The figure of St Andrew with the Cross is also visible on the badge.
