Description
The building at 159 Main Street in Rutherglen, Glasgow, is a Post Office designed by Sinclair and Ballantine between 1905 and 1907, with the Post Office added to the west in 1910-1911. It features a near-symmetrical library in the Edwardian Baroque style, characterized by sculptured details and constructed from light-coloured Bannockburn ashlar. The original glazing is intact throughout, with multi-paned upper sashes and some acid-etched panels that display Art Nouveau ornamentation.
The structure stands three storeys tall. The library has gables adorned with vertical strips and a granite-columned porch on the right, which is gated and showcases fine wrought-iron work. A canted window rises two storeys above the porch, and the area between the gables is almost entirely glazed on the lower two floors, featuring three-light windows with columned mullions that transition from Doric to Ionic styles. The building includes horizontal strings and cornices, and the interior is of high quality, boasting a marble entrance hall, columns with decorative capitals, and intricate cornice plasterwork. The rear range has a single-storey elevation with seven bays facing King Street, topped by a dome over the reading room. The Post Office section also incorporates columned mullions and has a porch on the left side.
