Description

The Town Hall in Rutherglen, Glasgow, was designed by Charles Wilson and built between 1861 and 1862. This Scots baronial style building features a prominent tower. An eastern range was added by Robert Dalgleish and John Thomson in 1876. In 1967, the building was converted to offices by Rogerson and Spence, which resulted in significant alterations to the interior. The stone exterior has been cleaned and the roofs are primarily slated.

The original structure consists of two storeys and an attic, with a wide gabled street elevation that includes bartizans and a large first-floor corbelled oriel window that originally lit the hall. The hall has large mullioned and transomed windows on its crenellated western flank, and the attic features paired windows at the foot of the gable with strap-worked dormer heads.

To the right, the square tower has a door at the base, sheltered by a 1902 cast-iron canopy, and contains the main stairway. The upper level has stepped corbel tables, a clock set in crow-stepped table-heads, and a bartizan along with a corbelled stair turret topped with a cap-house. The western flank displays large cast-iron lion mask spouts, similar to those found at Thirlstane.

The eastern range, which is more Jacobean in style than baronial, has three storeys with regular bays. It features decorative continuous moulding over the windows, which is treated differently on each floor, as well as a well-head gable on the right and a bartizan. There is also a 20th-century addition at the rear of the building.
