Description
These are a pair of mid-19th century cottages at 1-3 Lanark Road, Rosebank, with later alterations and additions. The cottages are single-storey and rectangular, with the cottage at number 1 having a two-bay extension to the left. They are built of droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar margins, though number 1’s margins are painted. A base course and eaves course are visible.
The southwest elevation, which faces the main road, is eight bays wide. Number 1 has a replacement part-glazed timber panelled door in the original central bay, with windows in the remaining bays, and in each bay of the later extension to the left. Number 3 has a window in each bay, the original door bay now having a window.
The northeast elevation has an irregularly fenestrated lean-to brick addition to the right (number 1), and a modern conservatory addition to the outer left (number 5). A side elevation has a window set into the gabled wall, with a gablehead stack above. A conservatory addition is slightly recessed to the right.
The windows feature a variety of glazing patterns, including 18-pane timber sash and case windows at number 1, and uPVC windows at number 5 and in the rear additions. The roof is slate, with slate also covering the two-bay extension to number 1, and a felt covering to the brick addition to the rear. Ashlar coped gablehead and ridge stacks are present, along with ashlar skews and uPVC rainwater goods.
Circular-plan gatepiers with ball caps are located at number 5, along with replacement wrought-iron railings. The cottages are part of a group with 18-30 Lanark Road, 21 Lanark Road and the Popinjay Hotel. They are shown on the 1859 first edition Ordnance Survey map.
