Description
26 Lanark Road, Rosebank
A 2-storey terrace of 10 bays designed by Alexander Cullen in 1900, with later alterations. The building is constructed as a near-symmetrical English Tudor gabled design, harled with red sandstone dressings and applied timber framing at first-floor level. It stands on raised ground, rising further towards the south-east (rear).
The principal north-west elevation is arranged in 9 bays, grouped 1-1-2-1-2-1-1. A stone flight leads to paired replacement boarded doors with rectangular fanlights at ground level in the central bay, above which a wallhead dormer breaks the eaves, positioned to the right at first-floor level. To the right is a 2-bay gabled group with windows at each floor in each bay and a finial to the gablehead. Paired boarded doors with a wallhead dormer breaking the eaves, set to the left, occupy the penultimate right bay. The outer right bay contains a ground-floor window with a first-floor window and gable breaking the eaves above. To the left of centre stands a 2-bay gabled group with windows at each floor in each bay, beneath which paired doors with a wallhead dormer breaking the eaves are positioned to the right, set in the penultimate left bay. The outer left bay has a ground-floor window with a first-floor window and gable breaking the eaves above. Number 28 to the outer left features a 4-light square angle bay window.
The south-east (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated at ground level, with tripartite windows to the main gables at first-floor level. A harled addition extends to the outer right (rear of No 28). The south-west (side) elevation comprises an irregularly fenestrated 2-bay gabled wall. A stone flight of steps leads to an architraved replacement boarded door with rectangular fanlight in the bay to the left of centre, with a flanking window to the left beneath a bracketed tiled canopy. A first-floor window sits above, with another window set to the right at first-floor level. The north-east (side) elevation is a blank gabled wall.
The building features a base course, moulded cills at ground level, and bracketed tiled canopies over paired doorways. Recessed canted windows appear at ground level, with 3-light windows at first-floor level. Overhanging eaves with exposed rafters are characteristic throughout. Glazing is predominantly leaded lattice with some uPVC replacements; small-pane timber sash and case windows predominate to the rear. The roof is red tile with red clay ridge and red tiles to door canopies; the rear is covered in grey slate. Evenly disposed harled and coped multi-flue ridge stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods complete the external detailing.
The interior was not inspected as of 1997.
A sandstone rubble boundary wall along the frontage features a flat ashlar cope, with replacement wrought-iron railings at number 28.
The building was upgraded to Category B listing on 7 May 1993. It forms a group listing with 1 and 3 Lanark Road, 21 Lanark Road, and the Popinjay Hotel. Positioned directly opposite the Popinjay Hotel, also designed by Cullen in 1900, the ensemble gives the centre of Rosebank a distinctive sense of stylistic unity through bold massing of Tudor gables. Cullen also worked in nearby Larkhall, designing the Church Hall for St Machan's Church, where he employed Oriental and Art Nouveau details—a marked contrast to his Tudor approach here.
