Description
20 Lanark Road, Rosebank
A 2-storey, 10-bay near-symmetrical English Tudor gabled terrace of houses designed by Alexander Cullen in 1900, with later alterations. The building is harled with red sandstone dressings and applied timber framing at first floor level. It sits on raised ground, rising further towards the rear (south-east). Key architectural features include a base course, moulded cills at ground floor level, bracketed tiled canopies over paired doorways, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and recessed canted windows at ground floor with 3-light windows at first floor.
The principal north-west elevation comprises 9 bays grouped as 1-1-2-1-2-1-1. At the centre, stone flights lead to paired replacement boarded doors with rectangular fanlights at ground level, above which a wallhead dormer breaks the eaves and is set to the right. A 2-bay gabled group to the right contains windows at each floor in each bay, with a finial above the gablehead. Paired boarded doors with a wallhead dormer set to the left occupy the penultimate right bay, with a single window at ground floor in the outer right bay and a first-floor window with gable breaking the eaves above. A further 2-bay gabled group sits to the left of centre, each bay containing windows at both floors. Paired doors with a wallhead dormer set to the right are positioned above the penultimate left bay, with a ground-floor window in the outer left bay and a first-floor window with gable breaking the eaves above. A 4-light square angle bay window serves number 28 at the outer left.
The south-east rear elevation is irregularly fenestrated at ground floor, with tripartite windows to the main gables at first floor. A harled addition extends to the outer right at the rear of number 28.
The south-west side elevation presents an irregularly fenestrated 2-bay gabled wall. A stone flight of steps in the bay to the left of centre leads to an architraved replacement boarded door with rectangular fanlight, flanked by a window to the left beneath a bracketed tiled canopy, with a first-floor window above. A further first-floor window is set to the right.
The north-east side elevation is a blank gabled wall.
The building predominantly features leaded lattice glazing with some uPVC replacements. The rear contains predominantly small-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof employs red tiles with a red clay ridge; red tiles cover the door canopies, grey slate covers the rear section. Multiple harled and coped multi-flue ridge stacks are evenly distributed. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place throughout.
The interior was not inspected as of 1997.
A sandstone rubble boundary wall runs along the frontage with flat ashlar cope. Replacement wrought-iron railings serve number 28.
This terrace was upgraded to Category B listing on 7 May 1993 and forms part of a group listing with 1 and 3 Lanark Road, 21 Lanark Road, and the Popinjay Hotel. Positioned directly opposite the Popinjay Hotel, also designed by Cullen in 1900, the ensemble provides the centre of Rosebank with a strong sense of stylistic unity through bold massing of Tudor gables. Cullen also worked in nearby Larkhall, where he designed the Church Hall for St Machan's Church with Oriental and Art Nouveau details, contrasting markedly with his application of Tudor motifs here.
