Description

Muiredge Primary School is a late 19th-century building, dated 1897, with subsequent alterations and additions to the rear. It is a two-storey, eight-bay, near-symmetrical rectangular primary school exhibiting Tudor collegiate detailing. The design features two-bay gabled corner projections, each flanked by ogee-capped and finialled octagonal piers that break the eaves.

The building is constructed of polished red sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings. A base course runs along the bottom, and continuous stepped hoodmoulds extend over the ground floor windows. A cill course is present at the first floor level, while hoodmoulds, continuous as a string course, cover the gabled first-floor windows. A blocking course with ball finial terminals adorns the side elevations. Window reveals are chamfered, and the windows feature stone transoms and mullions.

The west (principal) elevation is arranged as eight bays, grouped as 2-3-2-1. A three-bay central section presents a bipartite window in each bay at both floors. Flanking this are two-bay gabled sections, each also with bipartite windows on both floors. The left gable features a blind double slit motif beneath further blind slits with stepped hoodmoulds and a bracketed ball finial at the gable apex. The flanking piers incorporate blind slits. The right gable mirrors this design. An advanced architraved and corniced doorpiece is located to the right of the centre, with the word “GIRLS” carved above the doorway, a blind balustrade, and a ball finial at the ground level. A timber panelled door is set within, and a carved date panel is positioned between the ground and first floors, with a bipartite window above.

The south (side) elevation is nine bays, grouped 2-7. An advanced seven-bay section to the right has a bipartite window in each bay at both floors. A two-bay gabled block to the left mirrors the west elevation’s detailing, with a quatrefoil motif at the gablehead. The north (side) elevation is similarly treated.

The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring pierced red clay ridge tiles, ashlar coped skews with scroll terminals, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Replacement uPVC windows are fitted. The interior was not inspected in 1997.

Boundary walls, gate piers, and railings are also part of the site. Piers are constructed with chamfered square plans, plinths, string courses, cornices, and swept bell-shaped caps, with incised mouldings to the angles. The walls are built from stugged and snecked cream sandstone with a ridged ashlar cope. Railings and gates have been replaced.

The headmaster’s house is a single-storey, two-bay L-plan dwelling with an asymmetrical gable to the right, a gabled entrance porch to the internal angle, and a gambrel-gabled bay to the left. It is constructed of snecked polished red sandstone ashlar, with snecked and squared rubble to the blank south elevation. The west (principal) elevation features a three-light curved bay with a semi-conical roof and a narrow window in a flanking gabled bay to the right. A single window is located to the left. The north (entrance) elevation has a boarded door with a fanlight in the entrance porch, situated in the internal angle, and a single window to the right. A single window is also set to the left. Replacement aluminium windows are present, along with a grey slate roof, pierced red clay ridge, painted bargeboards with a timbered gable apex, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
