Description
Carmichael Mill is a probably early 19th-century grain mill, the only one remaining on the River Clyde. It is a 3-storey, 3-bay building constructed of whinstone rubble with dressed sandstone quoins. The lower part of the south gable has an ashlar facing. A lower, gabled kiln adjoins the south side, featuring a tall, square ventilator; a later single-storey lean-to is situated beyond it. A single-storey lean-to wheelhouse extends from the north end.
The main mill building has undergone alterations, including the removal of some floors and changes to window openings. The kiln has been converted into a dwelling house, with new windows inserted on the east elevation.
The mill’s machinery includes the skeleton of a low-breast shrouded paddle wheel, approximately 4 meters in diameter, with 6 flat iron spokes, cross bracing, and a large-diameter cast-iron axle. This drives 4 pairs of stones, 3 with a normal gear drive and one pair driven through external pulleys. A significant portion of the hopper, conveyor, and fanner system remains intact. A detached, iron-framed low-breast wheel within a masonry wheelpit formerly powered a threshing mill in a now-demolished building.
The mill is listed at Grade B for its completeness and the unusual layout of its machinery. The conversion of the kiln to a dwelling has been carried out sympathetically, respecting the original building's details. Details about the mill can be found in John R Hume’s "Industrial Archaeology of Scotland," volume 1, published in 1976, on page 159.
