Description
St Bride's Roman Catholic Church, designed by Gillespie, Kidd and Coia between 1963 and 1964, is a striking example of 20th-century church architecture located in East Kilbride. The church is accompanied by a paved piazza and a single-storey presbytery. The building is constructed primarily of red brick.
The church itself is a monolithic, rectangular structure. The west (principal) elevation features a blind wall punctuated by narrow slit windows along the roofline. The main entrance is concealed within a central cleft, and the wall is chamfered with stepped brickwork to the left of the entrance. The north elevation exhibits a vertical pattern of cogging, creating a richly textured surface. The east (rear) elevation presents a contrasting horizontal pattern of cogging, with a dip in the roof to the right and stepped recesses both above and at ground level. The south (liturgical east) elevation has five stepped recesses in the upper section, accommodating rainwater goods, and a stepped projection at ground level that corresponds to the tabernacle within.
The roof is steel-framed and features slot patent glazing for natural lighting, supplemented by three tall, copper-clad dormers.
The interior presents a large, full-height rectangular nave. Ground floor spaces include a side chapel, confessional, and baptistry. A freestanding gallery is positioned above the chapel and other areas, with a further gallery running along the entire north wall at a higher level. All spaces are top-lit. The nave has a paved floor, with wooden pews providing seating for 800 people. A raised sanctuary is carpeted in green, with a raised altar. A recessed alcove houses the tabernacle, with a red curtain at the back, and a sculpture of the crucified Christ is suspended above. The pulpit is built into the east wall, accessed by a recessed staircase with a curved front. Deep recesses along the east wall allow light to filter into the interior. An additional gallery serves as overflow space and is accessed via a concealed staircase in the west wall. A further upper gallery runs along the north wall, displaying a plain wall with a curved base and a regular pattern of stepped recesses, reachable by a concealed spiral staircase in the west wall.
The presbytery, chapel buildings, and piazza form a Z-plan, single-storey range with a basement, located to the west of the church, and are also built of red brick. They feature flat-topped roofs, fascias, and a small cornice of windows between the fascia and roof, creating an interplay of solid and void on the walls. A flight of steps leads from the southwest corner of the piazza to a trio of round, reinforced glass windows that illuminate a shrine to the Virgin Mother located below. The church and the two ranges of buildings frame the piazza, which is paved with black and red brick tiles arranged in a sunburst pattern, symbolising the church and Christ as the light of the world.
