Description
This is a pedestrian suspension bridge built around 1900, replacing a 17th-century masonry bridge that was destroyed by flooding in the 1890s. The route follows an ancient north-south road predating the work of Thomas Telford. The bridge features a substantial lattice truss span supported by lattice girder pylons, with wire-rope cables and steel rod suspenders. The steelwork is marked with the names "Lanarkshire Steel Co Ltd" and "Rowell/London" at the cable tensioning points, and the deck is constructed of timber.
The abutments largely incorporate the fabric of the earlier bridge, showing evidence of repairs and consisting of rubble and ashlar construction with concrete facings and bedding contemporary with the existing bridge. Fragments of the earlier bridge's parapets remain on the west bank; these include ashlar-coped sections that are unequally skewed on the plan. The coping on the north parapet is possibly original to the 17th-century bridge, while the coping on the south parapet dates to the 19th century. The approach on the east bank is wider and raised to be level with the parapet coping. Steel steps provide access to the bridge deck on both banks.
The bridge represents a good example of a wire-rope and truss suspension bridge, a design particularly common for footbridges built between the 1890s and the 1930s. Photographs relating to the former bridge are held by the Biggar Museum Trust.
