Description
The Post Horn Hotel, Crawford, dates to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with alterations in the early 20th century and a substantial rear wing added at that time. Originally built as Crawford Inn, it comprises a central two-storey, three-bay building, flanked by lower ranges. The main building features a central doorpiece in the Greek style (in antis), with unusually large windows, some of which appear to have been enlarged in the later 19th century. The walls are of painted rubble with ashlar margins, and originally had two gabled dormers, though the stacks have since been removed. The roof is slate-covered. A pair of lower wings sit to the west; the wing to the right was formerly connected to a coach house. A single stack remains on this western wing.
The early 20th-century rear wing is large, white-rendered, and has a red tile roof. It has an L-plan front with a prominent three-storey gable on the left side. The remainder of the front is constructed to resemble ferro-concrete and features large windows with original glazing and dormers.
To the right, alongside the roadside, is a detached block, also with a red tile roof, which is part of the main rear addition. The hotel is referenced in Horses for Hire, edited by Shiela Scott, published by the Biggar Museum Trust in 1983.
