Description
Bothwell Castle Gate House is a symmetrical gothic gatehouse built in the earlier to mid-19th century and restored in 1996. It is located at the entrance to Bothwell Park. The gatehouse features a crenellated square-plan block at the center, supported by angle buttresses. On either side, there are 2-bay screen walls with square-plan terminal piers that have aproned and swept pyramidal caps, along with buttresses between the bays. There are also lower curved and buttressed quadrant walls with terminating piers flanking the structure. The building is constructed from repointed polished red ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, and includes a base course, a string course at the upper level of the screen walls, and a string course below the parapet of the central block. The windows have chamfered surrounds and mullions, with hood moulds above the windows and doorway, and mask terminals on the hood mould over the doorway.
The northeast (principal) elevation features a 5-bay design. At the center of the main block is a channelled point-arched doorway, which has a pair of replacement strapped and bossed boarded timber gates. A pedestrian door is cut into the left leaf of the gates. Above the doorway, there is a relief of the Douglas coat of arms on the parapet. Each bay on either side of the doorway has a bipartite window. The quadrant walls are swept out to either side, and the octagonal terminal piers rest on a shallow plinth, featuring a string course, cornice, and shallow octagonal cap.
The building has fixed and blocked lattice pointed-arched windows, and the roof covering is obscured by the parapet, revealing replaced timber rafters, tie beams, and braces beneath. The ridged ashlar copes line the crenellations and both sets of screen walls.
