Description
The Keeper's House at Hamilton Mausoleum was designed by David Bryce and built between 1854 and 1855. This single-storey, asymmetrical building features a partly attic space and is constructed from stugged ashlar with polished ashlar pilaster angles and margins. It stands on a boldly buttressed vermiculated plinth with massive battered buttresses.
The entrance front includes an arcaded porch with steps on the left, a window, and a gable with two windows and an attic light on the right. The main elevation has a gable on the left side, with a panel flanked by slit windows at the basement level. There is a cantilevered three-light rectangular bay with a circled parapet at the ground floor, a small two-light window in the attic, and on the right, a slit window and a shouldered and keyblocked opening for a gig or hearse at the basement. Additionally, there is a narrow bay with a slit window and a broad bay with a three-light window. One window is positioned towards the mausoleum, with a panel at the opposite gable.
The building features a low-pitched slated roof with broad bracketed eaves and a tall central cross-plan ashlar stack, which is massively corniced and raised in semicircles at the center of its face. The flanking walls are made of stugged ashlar with polished coping and vermiculated piers.
