Description
This is an early Arts and Crafts lodge, dating from circa 1869 and designed by William Leiper. It was built for J M Little. The lodge is a single-storey building with accompanying gatepiers and wing walls, and forms part of a group of buildings of group value.
The lodge has an irregular plan and is constructed of snecked sandstone rubble. The road elevation features a central gabled bay with a mullioned and transomed bipartite window, having a low-relief pointed arch above. Set-back wings are positioned on either side; a wood-framed porch with ornamental bargeboards is located in the re-entrant on the left, and a window is present in the wing on the right.
The drive elevation contains a central bay with a piended roof and a transomed window. To the left is a circular turret alongside a tripartite mullioned and transomed window. A porch is situated on the right. Behind the turret is a single chimney stack, diminishing from a rectangular to an octagonal section. The roof is slated and features lead finials and a weather vane. Open eaves are present, with projecting rafter ends. A modern extension has been added to the rear.
The three pyramidal-capped gatepiers have corner shafts above the base course and feature chip-carved decoration. The wing walls are of snecked rubble with chamfered copes and raised end sections.
