Description
52-54 Fort Street in Ayr is a pair of nearly rectangular-plan houses built in the earlier 19th century. The buildings are two stories tall with an attic and a basement, featuring a total of seven bays. The west elevation is finished with painted render and includes a base course, eaves course, cornice, and blocking course. The window openings have cills, with ribbing present at the first floor.
The entrance elevation on the west side has consoled cornices above paired doorpieces in the fourth and fifth bays, although there are no exterior doors. Above these, there are two single windows aligned at the first floor. The remaining bays display regular fenestration on both the ground and first floors, with basement openings located to the right. The attic features four canted dormers.
The ground and first floors are fitted with 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the attic has plate glass windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and the stone skews are cranked to the south, with corniced gablehead stacks. The interiors were not seen in 1998.
