Description

1-7 Burns Statue Square in Ayr is a three-storey, five-bay building that was originally used as administration and recreation offices for a drill hall. Designed by James Archibald Morris, it dates back to 1901. The listing excludes the brick hall located at the rear.

The building is constructed from red sandstone ashlar and features shops on the ground floor. At the north end of the street elevation, there is an oriel window on the first floor that extends to form a three-stage castellated tower. Architectural details include a cornice above the ground floor, a moulded eaves course, and a dentilled cornice. The first-floor windows are bi and tripartite, with transoms and mullions. The windows on the first and second floors are mostly small pane, with casement windows on the second floor and sash and case windows on the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slates and has corniced chimney stacks with circular cans.

At 5 Burns Statue Square, there is a recessed entrance on the right featuring a glass and timber door. Above the shop, small pane transom lights are present along with plate glass windows. Some other shops have boarded windows with framing for small pane transom lights.

The interior of the shop at number 5 was viewed in 2015 and is primarily fitted with timber and glass fixtures and furniture that reflect the early 20th century style. It includes a timber counter with a glass-fronted display area underneath, additional glass-fronted display cases at the rear, and timber wall shelving with cupboards and drawers situated behind the counter.
