Description
The Gatepiers and Quadrant Walls at Adamton Country House Hotel, located on Tarbolton Road in Monkton, were designed by William Clarke and George Bell in 1885, with a billiard room added circa 1900 by James Hoey Craigie. This former country house, now a hotel since 2014, is a two-storey and attic building in the Jacobean Revival style, featuring an asymmetric design, distinctive Dutch gables, and a variety of prominent chimney stacks. The house is situated on an elevated site, with stone balustrades and steps leading to the north and west.
Constructed from randomly sized and coursed red sandstone with ashlar margins, the building includes a base course, moulded band courses, and a cornice. The entrance elevation features a Tudor-arched porte cochere. The windows vary in design, with some being Tudor-arched and others consisting of tri-partite openings with stone mullions and transoms. Canted bays have crenellated parapets, and the attic dormers are topped with round-arched pediments.
The windows are mainly plate glass set in timber sash and case frames. The roofs are covered with red tiles, and there are tall, clustered chimney stacks along with a single octagonal corner stack.
The interior, partially observed in 2014, includes an entrance hall with significant timber panelling. One public room features ornately carved dark timber panelling adorned with carved lions' heads. Decorative fire surrounds are present, including one made of marble, and some have overmantels. A large oak imperial stair with squared balusters and a curved balustrade is located in the center of the house. One ground floor room boasts a high, barrel-vaulted ceiling supported by timber corbels. Other rooms display decorative cornicing, and the dining room has an Ionic columned platform at the bay window.
The gatepiers and quadrant walls consist of a pair of square-plan red sandstone gatepiers with base courses and deep cornices, connected to low quadrant walls.
